For most of us enrolled at ASIJ, a new school year means new teachers, new school supplies, and new outfits. But for 70 new high-school students, there is much more. According to ASIJ’s Director of Admissions, Mrs. Mallat, around 65 to 80 new high-schoolers enroll in ASIJ every year. With these statistics, chances are you’re not the only new student in school.

Still, it is never easy being “the new kid.” Adjusting to a new academic and social environment (especially one as active as ASIJ) can be overwhelming. For the new students out there, here are a few quick tips on how to make the most of your new community. For all those old Mustangs out there, make sure to reach out to your new peers and make them feel welcome!

#1: Help is all around you.

Remember: Change is always hard, but you are not alone, and you are capable of adapting. Many of your ASIJ teachers, peers (many of whom are ambassadors) and counselors are always happy to help you. The best thing to do is look forward to the wonderful new connections and experiences you will have in a new country, and ask lots of questions.

#2: Friends are all around you, too.

Remember: Although saying goodbye to relationships and bonds is always hard, you will find a place you belong here at ASIJ. Most of our students have also left somewhere to be here, so we all understand the challenge of connecting to a new community. Clubs, activities, and sports are an easy way to widen your social circle and get to know people. Get involved and talk to different people to see who you click with. Your classes are also filled with students who naturally share your academic interests. When in doubt, talk to your ambassador.

#3: Give it time

Remember: No one’s expecting you to figure it all out right away. You will soon be able to navigate the campus and your schedule like a pro, and by then you will have made some new friends as well. Remember that we’ve all pretty much come here from somewhere else, but we’re all Mustangs together and want to help you adjust and succeed.

One final tip is to always be proud of who you are. Don’t change yourself to attempt to fit in, because you may miss the opportunity to find those with whom you truly connect.

Welcome to the Mustang family.
