Last Wednesday (September 10th), Charlie Kirk, a prominent American conservative political activist, was assassinated in front of 3,000 people, including his wife and two children, during one of his events at Utah Valley University. 

Kirk was well known for the events he held at college campuses, wherein he would debate students freely on divisive political issues in the United States, ranging from religion to gun control. His event at Utah Valley University was the first  on his “American Comeback Tour” of ten colleges and universities he would visit to debate students.,  

He was also well known for his conservative political views and his support for Donald Trump, JD Vance, and other Republicans. He would debate students over the conservative views that he held, many of which were considered controversial and inflammatory by his opponents. 

As of writing, authorities have taken Tyler Robinson into custody under suspicion of his involvement in the assassination. The bullet casings found alongside a rifle at the scene of the shooting were engraved with a variety of words and phrases, including anti-fascist slogans and even memes. The motive for the killing is still unverified. 

So far, there have been a variety of responses to the assassination. There have been vigils all across the US and even other countries to mourn his death. President Trump ordered flags at federally operated sites around the nation and world to be flown at half-mast. 

At the same time, others reacted happily to Kirk’s death in provocative social media posts. In reaction to this, there have been reports of people being fired from their workplaces in a large-scale harassment campaign orchestrated by conservative activists and supported at times by some Republican elected officials. 

Kirk’s assassination comes at a time of extreme political polarization in the United States, and it is yet to be seen whether it will lead to reconciliation or further fragmentation.
