Disney+ is Great for Marvel
December 3, 2019
Apple’s recently introduced a subscription service for video, a business model in which an individual pays a periodic fee in order to access a company’s library of TV shows and movies. The creation of Apple TV+ followed in the footsteps of other successes such as Netflix and Hulu. Now, yet another competitor has tossed its hat in the ring. This service has the potential to rise above the rest, and it’s called Disney+.
What makes Disney+ so threatening is its opportunity for exclusive content. Netflix, Hulu, and Apple TV+ all make completely original content that is only accessible on their platforms. For instance, Netflix’s Stranger Things took pop-culture by storm on the debut of its first season, but it’s only available to view from Netflix services. Business Insider reported that in the third quarter of Netflix’s current fiscal year, their subscriber base increased by 6.8 million people. They credit this success to the many exclusive shows released in the quarter. Because Disney owns so many properties ranging from Marvel, Pixar, and even the Star Wars films, in addition to their already incredible history of film, Disney+’s potential for success is especially high.
Disney is capitalizing on this content to gain subscribers. One example is with the incredibly popular Marvel movies. Over the past 11 years, Marvel has created the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) which has become monumental in the film industry. They have created 23 movies and have intertwined their stories together, amassing a tremendous audience and making some of the most successful films of all time. However, to understand beyond the next Marvel film, it will be necessary to watch the TV shows exclusive to Disney+. To get a picture of this, the Scarlet Witch and Loki series will need to be watched in order to understand the sequel to 2016’s Dr. Strange, Dr. Strange and the Multiverse of Madness.
This is a move by a massive conglomerate to pull money from our wallets, and to my surprise, I feel okay with it. I understand and agree with the argument that it is wrong to pigeonhole the fanbase of the MCU to a subscription service. However, I’m incredibly excited about the increase in content from Marvel Studios. With an illustrious title that comes with being part of the MCU, Disney cannot afford to jeopardize the quality of their content. In fact, Disney is putting their money where their mouth is with funding. Business Insider has also reported that budgets will be upward to $25 million per episode. While I know the cost for a film doesn’t ensure its quality, it’s still exciting to know that these shows will be taken seriously.
Disney+ launched on November 12 with a cost of $6.99 per month and the first of many Marvel series will be Falcon and Winter Soldier, debuting next year.

As a person who is not a marvel fan but enjoys the movies anyway, I do agree that Disney+ will be a great service, especially at just $6.99. I do not agree however, that Disney+ will be threatening. It’s not like anybody is subscribed to Netflix or other video services for Disney movies, so I doubt that anybody will stop their subscription to Netflix to subscribe to Disney+. Especially considering it’s relatively low price, most people who have a Netflix subscription who also wants Disney+ will just be subscribed to both.

Since I am also a MARVEL fan I agree with your opinion that it’s okay for Disney plus to profit from the MCU fanbase.

I think Disney+ was a great move by Disney too. All the content that is Disney specific would bring lots of viewers to the streaming platform.

I have Disney +, but I only knew about the children’s movies because I have two little sisters. I am excited to get into the marvel section of Disney + because I haven’t seen all of the films, and this will fill in some gaps. Disney + is a perfect idea for Disney because of the central base for Disney movies. It doesn’t get old because there are so many movies and shows that I haven’t heard of yet. But it also has childhood favorites like Phineas and Ferb and High School Musical. This is a great informational article.

Baby Yoda?
What do you think the next step for other movie streaming companies is, now that Disney has taken a majority of shows and movies for there own?

I concur that Disney is making clever business moves to further draw in money—they created Disney +, which has already gained a following, and Disney is home to many TV shows and movies that the Gen Z people have grown up with. It’s no surprise that people start paying Disney more for this as it brings nostalgia and new related content. I also agree that it seems wrong and selfish of Disney to constantly pull money from people’s paycheck, but I guess it’s the person’s choice to pay for these kinds of things. Nice article!

I really like how you included a lot about marvel and how Disney’s streaming service will benefit the amount of quality and funding being put into each episode they produce while also comparing Dinsey+ to other services as well. This made me really excited to get the subscription. Great article!

I agree completely. I am now watching The Mandalorian on Disney+ but there are some flaws with the streaming client like lots of buffering, and the audio bugged out twice for me. Despite the problems with the actual client, it is super convenient having all the Avengers movies, the Star Wars Prequels and the Original Trilogy, as well as a bazillion other high-quality movies and tv shows. Before, whenever I would feel like watching Episode 3 or whatever I would have to use another website (definitely not 123movies…), but now I can watch it in higher quality with no ads. However, by far my biggest problem is that there is no way for me to access it on my computer or phone without using a VPN which is super inconvenient.

I really enjoyed this article because I did not know a lot of things about Disney + before, so I found a lot of the things in this article interesting and surprising.

Since I am also a big fan of Marvel movies, this article was really useful and informative for me. I agree with you with the fact that Disney+ was a smart move, and I think it could really become a competitor for Netflix sometime, since the movies that Disney own are some of the most popular.

I agree that this is definitely beneficial for both Marvel and Disney as many Marvel fans will get Disney plus immediately. I also think that this is a risky but beneficial move for marvel to inform that fans need to watch Scarlet Witch and Loki understand the second movie of Doctor Strange.

Really nice article. I did not know many of these things about Disney+! This article was also eye-opening because it made me realize just how much potential Disney+ has. I also think the amount of detail included is really great touch. Overall a very intriguing and informative article.

I loved your vivid adjectives and your ways of connecting the paragraphs and sentences. This was very informative and helpful to understand what Disney + is.

I think it’s really great that you wrote a whole article on this since people like me, who love the MCU but aren’t quite sure about what’s going on with Disney+, can finally understand. I can tell you like both Disney and the MCU which I think was really good for this article. You put lots of information and all of it was very clear. Thank you!

I agree, this streaming service was definitely a smart move on Disneys behalf, especially when considering all the other properties that they could buy and add in the long run. Not only will their upcoming exclusive Marvel spinoffs interest many, but I imagine their exclusive Disney/Pixar and Star Wars content will too.

I also agree that it’s okay for Disney to be earning money from Marvel’s successful movies, especially because they are putting a lot of money back in to the movies themselves.

I am also a massive fan of Marvel, and I am excited about the Disney+ too! This was a fascinating and intriguing article—I love it!

I have been a fan of Marvel for some years now, and I’m very excited to see all of these new shows coming out. I especially can’t wait for Falcon and the Winter Soldier, as well as Loki, because these shows focus on some of my favorite characters.
I like that you included a side that may not be so positive, showing that different people may have different thoughts and opinions.

I really enjoyed reading this article because your intro paragraph really drew me into reading this whole article. Your article was also very informing about Disney+ and the amount of money being spent on big productions like Marvel.

I did not know about the features of being able to watch Marvel movies so I was surprised. I liked how it talks about different platforms that show the same thing, for example, Netflix and compare it with that.
