Having attended ASIJ since first grade, Kate Clement (‘26) is a true ASIJ veteran. Over her 11 years at the school, the connection she’s formed with the ASIJ community has played a pivotal role in shaping her life experience. She’s maintained relationships with her elementary and middle school teachers and knows students across all school divisions.
With three years of Student Council (StuCo) experience under her belt, it is clear that Kate is a leader. During her tenure, she has contributed greatly to the Council’s efforts. She takes her position seriously, and it’s a significant part of her school life. Kate tries to engage during meetings consistently and is steadfast in making the right decisions for the ASIJ community. Furthermore, she’s often a last-minute recruiter for class comps, a task that’s enabled her to sustain a strong relationship with the student body. Committed to productivity, Kate was the representative who proposed that StuCo meet every week—a measure that has undoubtedly improved StuCo’s capacity.
Kate’s adept leadership stems from her brother, Bryce Clement (‘23), who graduated during her Freshman year. She says that always having older friends inspired her to look to the future and become a leader. This relationship has also encouraged an objective that is central to Kate’s Campaign: high school-wide unity.
To advocate for division-wide unity, she wants advisory to provide more opportunities for underclassmen to bond with upperclassmen and receive advice. When she was a freshman, Kate was able to form relationships with older students through her brother, and she emphasized that this contributed considerably to her success. She believes that every underclassman should have the chance to befriend upperclassmen and gain guidance.
Another goal of Kate’s would be promoting school spirit. Detailing an anecdote from volleyball season, Kate remembered Kinnick’s exceptional school spirit. Although she believes our school’s sense of community and spirit has a strong foundation, she knows that it hasn’t reached its potential. As President, she’d hold more events like our white-out Friday Night Lights last September during football season. She doesn’t think ASIJ has enough opportunities for the school to come together and would like to dedicate her Presidency to promoting community and unity across the high school.
Moreover, she wants to ensure consistency across class grading. Kate has noticed that there are discrepancies in the way different teachers grade the same class and thinks that ASIJ students deserve more transparency through a uniform, transparent rubric.
Transparency is an element of StuCo that Kate believes is essential. She wants to maintain the Student Council’s transparency through Instagram and the Stuco Feedback Form. She believes that communication with the student body would be vital to leading a successful council.
For Kate, unity is the ultimate goal. By connecting the diverse group of students that attend ASIJ’s high school, she believes that she can lead us through a unified year.
